The brief
Clients who entertain constantly and wanted the garden to work in October, not just in July.
What we did
The kitchen moved three metres from where the clients had imagined it, because the prevailing south-westerly would have carried smoke straight through the bifolds. That was the least popular conversation of the project and the most important one.
The covered structure is a steel frame clad in thermally modified ash, with a solid roof rather than a slatted one — in Cork, a pergola that lets rain through is a pergola you use six days a year.
Lighting was designed alongside the layout rather than added after: ducting went in before the paving closed, and we came back at dusk twice to aim and dim everything on site.
Outcome
The owners report using the covered area through the winter. The lighting scheme runs at about 40% output on its usual scene — designed bright and dimmed down, which is the only way to get it right.
